I've spent quite a bit of time trying to figure out why I can't install the desktop-experience feature on Server 2012. Attempting to install it fails with 'Installation [.] failed.

Things I've tried: • Windows Update (system is completely up to date). • SFC /scannow (no faults found • Dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth (completes successfully) • Numerous reboots. • Tried through the PowerShell using 'install-windowsfeature desktop-experience', the Server Manager GUI (which I'm pretty sure just does the PowerShell command), connected by remote desktop, not connected by remote desktop.
After all that, still no dice. Any thoughts or help would be greatly appreciated. I'm basically installing the desktop experience package on a RemoteApp session host to have access to Photo Gallery. I just fixed it. 2012 R2 and it refused to enable, kept asking for the source files.
No matter what I tried, nothing worked. There are a few fixes on the net. I have tried them all in the last few weeks. So here is what I did. I installed Data Deduplication (it's completely unrelated) which then meant I had a restart waiting. Electrical Short Circuit Pdf on this page.
I then created a virtual 2012 R2 and enabled the desktop experience as the first package. I then copied the contents of System32 from the virtual to the computer I needed it on. I only copied the files that weren't already there which means I chose NO to overwrite.
After rebooting the server, Desktop Experience showed as enabled and all the components were now visible. I hope this helps someone else.
