Celtic Fc Chants
A Spurs fan made contact recently to ask whether any of the songs directed at Celtic by sections of the Rangers support are on the level of Arsenal's chant about 'gassing the Jews'. While it would not be appropriate to make any comparison, the question once again highlighted the fact that fans down south have no idea about Scotland's Shame and how anti-Catholicism has somehow warped into anti-Celtic Football Club. So, for the sake of casual readers unaware of the situation, here are a few things that might be interesting. Any song lyrics included here are merely for the purposes of highlighting the situation. The morphing of anti-Catholicism into anti-Celtic Football Club was described well by a member of the Vital Celtic forum following the assault which left Celtic coach Neil Lennon unconscious. The post read: 'Sectarianism - blah, blah! It has nothing to do with sectarianism. It has everything to do with being connected to Celtic, either as a member of staff or a supporter wearing the hoops! I'd say 30-40% of the Celtic supporters I know are not even Catholics! 'This is about Rangers fans' hatred, nothing more! They hate and fear everything about our club, they perceive any member of the club staff, or any club supporter as the hated Catholic enemy - end of debate.'
Now for the songs specifically. Perhaps it's due to the worldwide media coverage the English Premier League enjoys, but it's unlikely the following song will be heard at the Emirates - though there once was a time when Arsenal fans could be heard singing it: I never feel more like gassing the Jews, Than when Tottenham win and Arsenal lose For clarification Spurs, historically, had a strong Jewish contingent in their support and in the area around their ground, and a number of Jewish connections - which continue to this day. Clearly, Hitler's attempt to wipe out every Jewish person on the planet should not be used to try and score cheap points off rival fans at a football match - but the song could still be heard until not very long ago and received a mention in a Guardian comment piece (). Another favourite of Arsenal fans was the following ditty, to the tune of 'She'll be coming round the mountain.' We'll be running round Tottenham with our willies hanging out, We'll be running round Tottenham with our willies hanging out, We'll be running round Tottenham, Running round Tottenham Running round Totthenham with our willies hanging out, Singing 'I've got a foreskin, haven't you?' Singing 'I've got a foreskin, haven't you?' Singing 'I've got a foreskin, 'I've got a foreskin, 'I've got a foreskin, haven't you?'
The above can actually be sourced to a webpage full of Arsenal songs () - though it's interesting to see the 'gassing' reference doesn't make an appearance. Incidentally, outside the ground, Arsenal fans have been known to expose themselves at the conclusion of the song to prove they do, in fact, possess a foreskin. Readers are probably thinking 'but that's all in the past, times have changed now' and that's probably true, in England at least. The game is worth so much money to a truly global audience that anything would be stamped out as soon as it started (though if anybody has different experiences, feel free to contact me). But it wouldn't be fair to say 'that's all in the past' up in Scotland.
Not by a long shot. In fact, it was only in 2006 that UEFA had to ask Rangers to ban a specific song, namely the 'Billy Boys'. The Ibrox club had previously been fined £13,000 for the 'sectarian behaviour' of their fans at a Champions League game ().B B So what is the 'Billy Boys,' some may ask? Here are the lyrics: Hullo, Hullo We are the Billy Boys Hullo, Hullo You'll know us by our noise We're up to our knees in Fenian blood Surrender or you'll die For we are The Brigton Derry Boys For those unaware it is, in very brief terms, about killing so many Catholics that those doing so are knee-deep in blood. So a song about a mass-slaughter of Irish Roman Catholics. Which perhaps raises a question regarding the Arsenal song belittling the Holocaust. For the record, in 2006 UEFA forced Rangers to announce, before every home game, that the signing of the Billy Boys was banned.
