LATITUDES YEAR PROGRAM Latitudes Year is Carpe Diem’s most comprehensive program. Choose any of our 12-week group semesters during the Fall, followed by a customized 12-week Independent Spring Semester in the region of your choosing. Strengthen your independence and personal leadership skills in the context of our global community. Gain life-enriching experience by volunteering your time and focusing on personal goals through immersion in a local NGO, nonprofit, or other organization during the second semester. Engage with a local community and acquire practical skills, all while having fun, discovering more about yourself, and redefining your next step in this journey called life.
SEMESTER PROGRAMS Our programs open the eyes of young adults and help them learn more about themselves by learning more about the world. Our students come from all backgrounds and have many different reasons for wanting to attend an international study abroad program; however, they have a few very important things in common – they all want to grow and experience the world. We believe that “Passion is a better predictor of success than IQ will ever be” and strive to help each student strengthen their understanding of passionate living.

Instead of taking classes at Harvard this fall, Malia Obama is taking a 'gap year.' The first daughter is one of at least 30,000 high school seniors who are choosing to take a year off before beginning their freshman year in college. It is also part of a trend that educators are encouraging, the better to help would-be students gain experience and maturity. A is defined as a break taken between high school and college that might include travel, work, research or volunteering before continuing academic studies. 'Functionally, what they're doing over the course of a gap year is typically an amalgam of a variety of different things,' Knight said. There might be some work, 'but there is also a variety of volunteer opportunities, some internships and a little bit of adventure,' he added.
Knight told CNBC about 80 percent of 'gap year' programs involve international travel, and the average cost is $30–$40,000 per year. With that steep price tag, is it only for the wealthy, or the children of prominent politicians?
Knight acknowledged 'students that have more access to finances have more choices in front of them. Inevitably that's the world we live in. ' But Knight said there are 'a bunch of activities and opportunities that are in front of students to do this, at either very low cost or even get paid.'
